O'Neil auditioned for Canada Idol's season 3 at the beginning of 2005 when she was still a high school student. The judges were impressed with her singing and she advanced to the Top 100 Round. O'Neil had received high praise by the jury. However, she suffered massive losses during the top 10 week and Top 9 week of the finals. She ended up in the bottom three, and then second place. Judges were amazed by her performance, and suggested viewers choose singers who were well-known and had a strong voice, like Melissa. O'Neil's performances were so good that she didn't even make it to the bottom three once in the future. With two other stunning performances on the 7th of September 2005, the day that O'Neil along with Rex Goudie advanced to the competition's final two competitors, judge Werner reported that newspaper headlines would read O'Neil defeated Goudie to become the third Canadian Idol, the first female winner, and also the youngest winner of the show's time . O'Neil's Canadian Idol win was announced by Premier Paul Martin immediately.
